Mochi Donuts, pronounced mow-chee, are a fusion of American pastry and Japanese Chewy Mochi. They are made from glutinous rice flour or tapioca starch, added with sugar, egg, milk, and baking powder.

The Origin of Mochi dates back to the Heian era (794-1185) when Japanese men and women prepared Mochi (rice cakes) as a ceremonial dish on New Year's Eve. They loved it so much that when Samurai soldiers travelled for war, they took Mochi along with them and later the famous rice cake ended up in Hawaii.

Charmaine Ocasek discovered Mochi in 1992 and created Mochi Donuts. As Hawaii is close to Japan, they tend to pick up on Japanese delicacies before the rest of the country, as a substantial Japanese-Hawaiian population resides in Hawaii.

Pon De Ring

Mochi Donuts was further evolved into an 8-dough-ball linked circular and was named Pon De Ring, inspired by Pao De Queijo, a famous Brazilian cheese ball dish. Pon De Ring was designed by a Japanese Donut firm known as Mister Donut (now Dunkin Donut). This is how a fusion delicacy came into existence.
