Social Media Algorithm

Social media algorithms is arranging posts in the user's feed based on relevance and search feed rather than publish time. The likelihood that a user will want to see a particular content is used by social networks to determine which content appears first in their feed.

Social media is now ingrained in our culture that it is now a daily activity for the vast majority of people worldwide. Not only are established networks gaining users on a daily basis, but new platforms are also attracting brands looking to engage new audiences through social media marketing. With so many users on these platforms, there is a need for order and relevancy, which an algorithm provides.

Let’s understand what an algorithm is.

“An algorithm is a mathematical set of rules that specifies how a set of data should behave. Algorithms in social media help maintain order and aid in the ranking of search results and advertisements.”

What are social media algorithms and their use?

A social media algorithm is a computer algorithm that determines which social media posts appear at the top of your feed and which do not. Overall, the amount of engagement that piece of content has received (especially within a short time frame) and how much you tend to engage with that creator's content, in general, are the top factors in most social media algorithms.

There are no two platforms that use the same algorithm. With so many users on these platforms and social media algorithms constantly changing, it is difficult for marketers to keep up. We can't possibly know every detail that goes into each change, but we have a good idea. The algorithm in use determines where you rank in social media ads and where your content appears in a user's feed.

Different Social Media Platform Algorithms Explained

Facebook Algorithm

Facebook is still the most popular social media platform in terms of users, with 2.5 billion active monthly users it boosts audience engagement. The feed is intended to display posts that elicit emotion rather than those that are promotional. Users will see posts from their families and friends first, followed by posts from businesses.

The following are the most significant updates for 2022:

Posts in Groups and Events are being prioritized by #Facebook. Their redesign emphasizes these as "the two most important reasons people visit Facebook every day."

Hashtags: When you're writing a post on Facebook, you'll see a list of suggested tag listings. This new feature is still in beta, so not everyone can use it yet, but it could be a great way to increase your Facebook reach.

Facebook has also taken steps to reduce spam and overtly promotional content.

Instagram Algorithm

“Instagram has added Reels, their own version of TikTok.”

Instagram is light years ahead of Facebook in terms of engagement. Brands' Instagram content receives a 1.6 percent engagement rate. But the most recent Instagram algorithm is far more complex and comprehensive. It takes into account not only engagement, relevance, and timeliness, but also overall user behavior and preferences.

While there is always the fear that Instagram will begin to degrade content from business profiles, there is still evidence that this is the case. In 2022, even more, users will see content from profiles they do not follow (not in the Discover tab but in their main feed).

This data is derived from your comments, likes, shares, and saves on a specific account's posts. This data is also used by the Instagram algorithm to understand user likes and dislikes in order to promote that account's posts to a higher ranking on the user's feed and suggest similar accounts in the 'explore' section.

Instagram has revealed the criteria they use to determine whether or not to recommend your content. The following are the most important points:

  • Posts containing clickbait or engagement bait are not recommended.

  • Contests and giveaways are not recommended.

  • Repurposed content from another source that lacks added value is not recommended.

  • Instagram has also added Reels, their own version of TikTok. Some Instagram accounts have skyrocketed since implementing this new feature, so it may be worthwhile to devote some time to this type of content.

Instagram's algorithm, like Twitter's, was based on chronology, so it prioritized posts by time. The algorithm now takes into account six key factors: interest, user relationship, following, session time, time posted, and user session time.

Reels are currently being boosted in order for people to take advantage of the new feature. This means that your brand should not be afraid to experiment with new features in order to increase engagement and get noticed on Instagram.

Twitter Algorithm

Relevance and publishing time can both be used as ranking parameters in the Twitter algorithm. Users who want to see the most recent posts can adjust their content preferences. If this option is not selected, Twitter will rank posts similarly to Facebook and Instagram.

When Twitter first launched in 2006, it ranked posts based on the timeline, focusing on the day and time rather than the content. Today, Twitter's algorithm is more complex, relying on relevance rather than solely on time posted.

Twitter's algorithm's primary signal is:

  • Recent Tweets

  • Engagement

  • Media (GIF, photo, video)

Twitter has made it possible to switch between the top tweet’s algorithm and recent tweets. This is only for iOS. It's possible that they'll bring this to the desktop as well.

Twitter will continue to prioritize tweets with high engagement and recent tweets, indicating that volume and frequency are still important on this platform.

We've also seen higher levels of engagement when:

  • Tweets can include up to two hashtags and up to 100 characters.

  • Tweets contain an image link

  • You specifically request that your followers' retweet.

Tip: You can’t ignore Twitter as it is vital in the B2B space!

4. LinkedIn Algorithm

While the LinkedIn video is still important in 2022, it is not as important as it was when users were first allowed to upload videos. The algorithm was clearly prioritizing any video at the top of the feed at the time. Videos must now achieve high levels of engagement in order to be prioritized, but they may still have a slight advantage over static content.

In 2022, LinkedIn will continue a trend that began in 2019, by de-prioritizing content from mega influencers and giving users the opportunity to see content from non-internet-famous people in their network. Also, LinkedIn users can see posts from people they haven't connected with within their feed if someone on their list likes those posts.

5. YouTube Algorithm

While YouTube is still underutilized in the B2B space, it is still a valuable platform. The algorithm is notoriously difficult to understand, and it displays user content in a variety of ways.

One of the most common is being shown a related video to that topic or by the same content creator after you watch something.

Even in 2022, the YouTube algorithm continues to take into account a user's proclivity to engage with your channel and the type of content you post. In 2022, your relationship with your subscribers will be far more important than your subscriber count.

6. Pinterest Algorithm

While Pinterest has a very different layout and follower strategy, it is still considered a social media platform. Pinterest's algorithm is built around four key elements:

  • Relevance of topic

  • Quality of a Pin

  • Domain quality

  • Quality of the Pinner

Pinterest Algorithm Update 2022

Pinterest continues to downgrade spammy pins in the algorithm, as it did in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Pinners must exercise caution when pinning the same pin in dozens of group boards, and group boards with a large number of contributors no longer have the distribution reach they once did. The Pinterest algorithm's ability to vet pins for visual quality and ensure that pins are only pinned to relevant boards is also improving. Pinterest prioritizes quality over quantity. As a result, you should pin fewer but newer and higher-quality pins.

Conclusion

These were the updates to social media algorithms in 2022!

In recent years, digital transformation has propelled social media to the coveted position of being the most preferred platform for marketing. Digital marketing experts, on the other hand, can assist brands in breaking through the clutter and effectively engaging with their audience.
